In order to easily accomplish this goal, each month is designated to an entire grade level where each volunteer is asked to help only 2 days in that month. However.....ANY amount of time - whether it's one hour, one day or more than 2 days - is gladly welcomed! Furthermore - anyone from any grade level can volunteer on any day, in any given month. You do not need to be on the calendar to volunteer! If you ever have any spare time and would like to volunteer at the last minute, we encourage you to come on in, grab an apron and nametag and head to the playground. The more volunteers, the better! Recess hours on the big playground are from 11AM to 12:10PM.
Volunteers are needed whether Recess is outdoors OR indoors (due to rain or heat advisory days). When indoors, volunteers are asked to man the hallways and/or a few classrooms at a time, as the teachers are usually not in their classrooms during that time.
Before the start of each month, an email is sent out to the designated grade level asking for volunteers for the month. Each parent who replies with their available dates/days is scheduled accordingly on the calendar.
The calendar, along with a document outlining the Playground rules and information, is sent to each scheduled volunteer via email approximately 5 days before the start of the month. If anyone needs to cancel once they're scheduled on the calendar, they need to find a replacement for themselves by either A) emailing all of the month's volunteers asking to switch dates with someone or B) having a responsible adult family member, neighbor or friend take their place.
As a way of saying thanks and expressing our gratitude for your help, our PTO provides a reward where each volunteer is eligible to earn a chance to win a $25 gift card from our school's Scrip Program. Every volunteer fills out a ticket each time they come in, and at the end of each month we have a drawing. The winner is notified via email or phone.
This Playground Volunteer Program is a great and fun way for parents to become involved with their child/children during Recess. Even more importantly, it greatly contributes to the safety of our children!
