Getting Started…
1. Contact your teacher to schedule your session – perhaps you can agree on a regular day and time for presenting lessons on a monthly basis.
2. Ask how much time you have to present and do the project. Usually children in elementary grades can listen attentively for 5-15 minutes, depending on the grade and topic. We encourage less talking, more project work.
3. Ask if the teacher would like a particular print or artist to be shown or if they can provide you with a list of the Core Knowledge themes that will be taught each month. One of our goals is to enhance and enrich the curriculum the children are studying. Please feel free to share our art inventory with the teacher so they can identify works that would enhance their curriculum.
See our on-line lists of lessons by grade-level
4. Look through the art materials in the library and decide which art project you will be doing. Please check out the art print selected with the librarian, and return all art pieces promptly.
Please email us (Sarah at
scottsdalepyes@yahoo.com or Toni at
rrucker6@cox.net) and let us know which artwork you will be using and when, as well as any supplies you'll need from the art cupboards. We will maintain a group calendar on-line so as to avoid any conflicts between classes.
We have
on-line lesson plans by grade level. We also have lesson plans and information materials in the filing cabinet by the back exit of the library for many masterpieces. These are currently being scanned and posted on the website as well.
5. Basic art supplies are available in the AM cupboards in the copy room. If you need anything in addition to these materials, you can either purchase these yourself as a donation to the program (please let us know so we can keep track of what is being purchased for the program) or you can make a request for funds (email Sarah at
scottsdalepyes@yahoo.com or Toni at
rrucker6@cox.net).
Please email Sarah or Toni any plans you have for using AM supplies or tools from the cupboards.
6. Ask the teacher in advance of your visit whether there is a space available for displaying the artwork made by the children. Often, with some planning, a bulletin board in the hallway can be made available for a week or two.
